Description
Mining is very useful, because it is probably the easiest way to make money in RuneScape. Obviously, to increase your mining level, you will need to mine ores from rocks. Depending on your level the ores you can mind and the probability you have of actually mining it.

How to Mine
In order to start mining you need to 2 things.
1. A Pick Axe (You can get one in various locations)
2. A Rock to Mine
Finding a mine:
Mines are fairly easy to find over the world of runescape, there is one in Barbarian Village, one on the edge of the Al-Kharid Desert, the Dwarven Mine which is near Falador, a mine to the east and another one to the west of Varrock, a great coal mine at the wilderness and at the edge of the wilderness a small rune mine, the Blurite Ore, an ore used in the Knights Sword quest can be found in the Ice Giant Mine which is located next to the house of the dwarf who asks for it, the Rimmington Mine which is located next to Rimmington, and the mine in the Edgeville Dungeon. Those are the mines for free members. For more specific locations try using the map of the runescape world.
Prospecting:
In order to Prospect a Rock, simply go up to it and Right Click it and select 'prospect'. After that either it will Say "You find nothing Interesting" or "This rock contains (ore name in here)". Rocks are color-coded according to their ore so once you're able to recognize which colors correspond to which ores you'll be able to tell what is in a mine very easily.
Mining the Rock:
To mine a Rock simply left click and it will mine, if you successfully get an ore it will say "You managed to get (ore name in here)". If you fail it will say something like "A few lumps of uninteresting Rock fall off" or something related to that which actually means you got nothing. Also when mining you can get GEMS at random, gems are good for making money but sometimes hard to get so be careful if you find one. The gems are: Sapphire, Emerald, Ruby, or Diamond. You can mine gems at any level in any rock with an ore in them. As a reward for the Shilo Village quest, you also get access to Gem rocks. Mostly you will get semi-precious stones but you have a good chance of getting the other gems as well. Wearing a charged Amulet of Glory also increases your chance of getting the gems.
Picks
There are 6 different picks in RuneScape. The better the pick, the more your character will automatically swing it in representation of making it easier to gain ores while preventing destabilizing rapid mining of rare metals. There are bronze, iron, steel, Mithril, Adamantite, and Rune picks.
| Pick | Number of swings | Price | Required level |
|---|---|---|---|
| Bronze | 1 | 1 | 1 |
| Iron | 2 | 140 | 1 |
| Steel | 3 | 500 | 6 |
| Mithril | 5 | 1,300 | 21 |
| Adamantite | 8 | 3,200 | 31 |
| Rune | 12 | 32,000 | 41 |
Panning
In the Digsite (members) there is a stream near the southern most end full of 'Panning Points'. In order to pan there, you first must get a panning tray. These spawn in the largest tent. Then you must have given the Guide a cup of tea before he'll let you pan. Now use the panning tray on the panning point. Doing this gives you 5 mining Exp. Search the panning tray and see if you get anything. You can get coins, a rock sample, gems, and Gold Nuggets. Once you have three gold nuggets (these are stackable) you can use them with the Archeological Expert, found in the Educational Center, and he will give you an unrefined lump of gold which you can make into a gold bar.
Money Making
Making Money with Mining can sometimes be very hard and take a long time, but you won't get anything good unless you spend time practicing it. Making money on what you mine depends on what you can mine. The most common sold ore is Coal. You only need 30 mining for it, and you can sell it in huge bulks and make easy money. Allot of people don't just buy coal as is, most likely you are going to have to cert your ore for easy and more secure trade.
Authors Opinion
Well I myself like mining allot (I am level 52 when I am making this guide) and mining is a good way to fame and riches, it takes hard work and time but as soon as you can start mining addy (Adamantite) and rune (Runite) you will be getting loads of money specially if you can smith them into good stuff.
