To begin this quest, first talk to Duke Horatio within the kingdom of Lumbridge. Ask him if he has a quest. He will tell you that he found an odd talisman, and wishes you to take it to the head wizard of the wizard tower. Agree to this and head directly to the wizard's tower, found just south of Draynor, with this air talisman you have..

When you arrive here head down to the basement. Here you will find Sedridor. Talk to him and then get to the decision where it says to give him the package, even though you don't yet know he is the head wizard yet, he is indeed. He will then tell you that this could be the clue to something very big. He tells you to deliver a package to Aubury in Varrock.

Head to Varrock and enter the rune store. Talk to Aubury and say you have a package for him. He will say he needs some time with it. Just talk to him again right after that. He is about to tell you the "secret" behind the big plot of this quest, but then says he doesn't trust you. He gives you some research notes, which are written in a secret code that you cannot read, to take back to the head wizard. He says that the wizard will tell you everything you need to know about the "secret."

When you take the notes back to Sedridor he first explains the little secret. He says:

"Now as you may or may not know, many centuries ago, the wizards at this Tower learnt the secret of creating Rune Stones, which allowed us to cast Magic very easily. When this Tower was burnt down the secret of creating runes was lost to us for all time... except it wasn't. Some months ago, while searching these ruins for information from the old days, I came upon a scroll, almost destroyed, that detailed a magical rock deep in the icefields of the North, closed off from access by anything other than magical means. This rock was called the 'Rune Essence' by the magicians who studied its powers. Apparently, by simply breaking a chunk from it, a Rune Stone could be fashioned very quickly and easily at certain elemental altars that were scattered across the land back then. Now, this is an interesting little piece of history, but not much use to us as modern wizards without access to the Rune Essence, or these elemental altars. This is where you and Aubury came into this story. A few weeks back, Aubury discovered in a standard delivery of runes to his store, a parchment detailing a teleportation spell that he had never come across before. To his shock, when cast it took him to a strange rock he had never encountered before... yet that felt strangely familiar... As I'm sure you may have now guessed, he had discovered a portal leading to the mythical Rune Essence. As soon as he told me of this spell, I saw the importance of his find, for if we could but find the elemental altars spoken of in the ancient texts, we would once more be able to create runes as our ancestors had done! It would be the saviour of the wizards art!"

Your character ask how he fits into the wizard's little story. He replies:

"You haven't guessed? This talisman you brought me... it is the key to the elemental altar of air! When you hold it next, it will direct you towards the entrance of the long forgotten Air Altar! By bringing pieces of the Rune Essence to the Air Temple, you will be able to fashion your own Air Runes! And this is not all! By finding other talismans similar to this one, you will eventually be able to craft every rune that is available on this world! Just as our ancestors did! I cannot stress enough what a find this is! Now, due to the risks involved of letting this mighty power fall into the wrong hands I will keep the teleport skill to the Rune Essence a closely guarded secret, shared only by myself and those Magic users around the world who I trust enough to keep it. This means that if any evil power should discover the talismans required to enter the elemental temples, we will be able to prevent their access to the Rune Essence and prevent tragedy befalling this world. I know not where the temples are located, nor do I know where the talismans have been scattered to in this land, but I now return your Air Talisman to you. Find the air temple, and you will be able to charge your Rune Essences to become Air Runes at will. Any time you wish to visit the Rune Essence, speak to me or Aubury and we will open a portal to that mystical place for you to visit."

Your character asks if Sedridor and Aubury are the only ones who know how to cast the teleport spell. He replies:

"No... there are others... who I will tell of your authorization to visit that place. When you speak to them, they will know you, and grant you access to that place when asked. Use the Air Talisman to locate the air temple, and use further talismans you find, to locate the other missing elemental temples. Now... my research notes please?"

You give him the research notes, and you are given back your air talisman. You have now completed the quest, and are granted one quest point as well as access to the Rune Essence mines if you asked to be teleported by either Aubury or Sedridor. The Rune Essence mine is a large mine with four branches from it's center. There are four portals which teleport you back to either Aubury or Sedridor (though it's ideal you teleport to Aubury if you're trying to collect blank runes, as there is a bank right near Aubury's rune shop). Who you teleport back to depends on who you used to enter the mines.
